The Bernau Index
A bit about the Bernau Index from the Society of Genealogists’ Guide.
During his research as a genealogist, the late Charles Allan Bernau (1878-1961), one of the founders of the Society of Genealogists (SoG), became increasingly aware of the need for a surname index to historical sources, particularly for the eighteenth century. Between 1914 and 1929 he and a team of helpers indexed many names from a variety of records, the majority of which are at the Public Record Office (PRO), 'ending up with something like four and a half million slips of paper'.
After his death, the paper slips were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah and copies of these microfilms are available at the Society of Genealogists. The original Index and a few associated records now form part of The Bernau Collection owned by Mr Malcolm Pinhorn of Norman's Place, Calbourne, Isle of Wight PO30 4QR.
The Bernau Index is mostly concerned with the legal cases known as Chancery Proceedings 1714-1758, but it also contains names collected from other records.
