North Yorkshire Tour 2004

In the quest for finding any remnants of the Wawn family in North Yorkshire, I took to the streets, lanes, villages, moors and most importantly, the Churchyards in  a Hertz Rent a Car.

Trudging through church yards looking at gravestones is a very tedious process. Many are overgrown, any overgrowth is nettles, the ground is uneven and you're constantly straining your neck to get a view of the stones.

The first day's touring was in vane. The second turned up (not literally) the final resting place of Samuel and Mary Wawne of Sinnington.

Day One                        Day Two

Appleton-le-Street        Kirkbymoorside
Barton-le-Street           Sinnington
Slingsby                       Middleton
Hovingham                   Pickering
Stonegrave                  Thornton-le-Dale
Oswaldkirk                   Allerston
Helmsley                      Routh
Ampleforth                   and finally, the village of  Wawne !
Gilling
Nunnington
Harome
Normanby
Great Edstone
Lastingham

Most of the 'Day One' venues are very small villages located within a few miles of each other.

The result has now very largely emerged as a 'photographic journal of the churches of North Yorkshire', which somebody may find some use for.

It would be nice to directly link this back to the text of Wawn Family Records, but alas, it is too much work.
